A movement to rename the construction as “The Little White House” got significant steam in September. In October, a small group of supporters was standing in front of it, holding signs and throwing paint at it.
The signs and the paint have since dried. But in a brief period in late October, the “Little White House” was defaced with fresh paint: blue and red stripes were slapped over the white and blue of “The Little White House,” and two blue stars were placed on top.
“This is exactly the right time to do this,” said Joel Belz, a volunteer with the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho and the Boise-based Human Rights Campaign, which worked to bring attention to the anti-equality movement.
On Friday, graffiti appeared on the Idaho Supreme Court building. Above the bottom line in the word “Judges,” the graffiti features a thumb and pointer finger reaching toward the word.
“The Little White House” still stands, but the signs and paint have been removed, said Bryanna Cicciarelli, an Equality Idaho spokeswoman.
For now, there is little that can be done.
“One way or another, it’s a definite affront to the dignity of all people,” Belz said. “But so far it’s just been a nuisance.”
The ACLU’s work in Idaho began in the late 1970s, when the organization moved to Idaho after a state legislator filed an anti-abortion bill.
The ACLU then moved on to other issues, and anti-equality opponents began organizing in the state.
In 1995, Equality Idaho was formed and today is the state’s largest LGBT advocacy group. In 2015, it had more than 300,000 members.
The Little White House currently belongs to Equality Idaho.
